Craner Classics are delighted to present this extremely rare Vauxhall Astra 1300 S Celebrity. These were first launched as a limited edition range and according to the DVLA there are now only eight left, and very likely none in as good a condition as this fine example.
Derived from the Opel Kadett D, these Astras were the first ever front wheel drive cars produced in Europe by General Motors, and in order to impress, the company pulled out all the stops, streamlining the cylinder head and incorporating overhead camshafts to eke out a highly impressive 75hp from the 1297cc engine, rivalling the output not only of the Cavalier 1.6-litre of the time but, for instance, a 1.6-litre VW Golf from the mid-1990s – a quite remarkable feat.
Add to that the fact that the car weighs in at a slimline 880kg and the car’s torque leaves nothing to be desired for an early-80s family hatchback. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission, delivering smooth and obedient gearchanges.
The car is finished in grey over silver with matching grey interior. The bodywork is perfectly straight and in fine order, with sharp corrosion-free arches and straight joins throughout, and all minor details – vinyl, rubber trim, chrome highlights, sports decals – are also in pristine condition.
The interior is likewise unobjectionable – seats, carpets, rooflining, dashboard and door trims are all free from signs of wear or damage, and all add to the highly original look and feel of the car. The special (and original) hard-wearing ‘weave’ patterned seats ensure the interior will withstand the ravages of time bettter than most. All in all this Astra Celebrity is largely as it would have been thirty-plus years ago, including the factory-fitted sunroof adding a welcome nice touch to the driving experience.
The original service and maintenance booklet which accompanies the car forms part of a considerable file of paperwork, detailing the considerable expense taken to maintain it in such excellent condition since the car was supplied new by Goodall & Son of Evesham way back on 25th May 1984.
The car has covered only 56,000 miles until now, and the MoT history confirms the car’s low mileage as genuine. As part of a recent minor overhaul the car now has new plug leads and ignition components, and a new exhaust.
It starts first time every time and is a fabulous drive, agile but also majestic on the open road, with plenty of room inside.
A rare sight nowadays and much loved and respected, these Astras are very pleasing on the eye and tell of an era when eagerness to please seems to have been a lot higher on the priority list of car manufacturers. Hence outstanding performance combined with excellent fuel efficiency, a spacious and comfortable interior, and unmistakeable good looks. A fine family saloon to be cherished.
