This is a 1970 Commer Karrier Gamecock Tipper Truck. This vehicle has had only one former keeper. Nonetheless as the photos show this lorry has been the subject of an extensive restoration, which entailed the custom fabrication of numerous components including front wings – made-to-measure and re-rolled into the precise shape of the truck – and new tyres all round.
This is a rare survivor of the Commer Karrier family and thanks to the countless hours and large amounts of money invested in the restoration, this Gamecock’s engine now thrums clear and strong, and will do so for many a year yet.
Early versions of the Commer Karrier used the same engine and could be found in the Westmorland Fire Brigade’s Fleet and other municipal service vehicles, which shows just how highly rated the engines were for power and reliability.
The four-speed synchromesh gearbox also performs admirably, and the 12V electrical system is similarly problem-free.
The Triple-Safety brakes are razor sharp, the lorry steers very obediently, the cabin is spacious and features a very nicely restored deep upholstered interior. The driver gets a very good all-round view from the cab, and to quote the original manufactuer’s brochure, “instruments that can be read at a glance and controls located for quick, safe operation.”
As the photos show, this is a very eye-catching truck, and would stand out at any event or show, especially considering this Karrier Gamecock is now 50 years old. The inline 4-cylinder diesel engine manages to combine excellent pulling power with good economy.Although these Karriers do come in a variety of vibrant colours, we think you’ll agree very few are quite as striking as this one.
